Life Line Training & Operations

ANGINA

Caused by a narrowing of the coronary arteries normally through exertion or stress.

Signs & Symptoms

  • Pain in the chest (cramp and can feel like indigestion)
  • Shortness of breathing
  • Anxiety
  • Sweating
  • nausea
  • Feeling very weak
  • Increased pulse rate

Treatment

  • Rest the casualty to ease the strain on the heart
  • Lots of reassurance
  • Ask if they have their medication
  • Help administer GTN
  • Ask if they can take aspirin and if so chew slowly
  • Call 999 or 112
  • If pain persists suspect heart attack

HEART ATTACK

Caused by a clot in the coronary artery.


Signs & Symptoms

  • A crushing and vice like central chest pain-may spread to the arms and jaw
  • Rapid, weak and irregular pulse
  • Rapid breathing
  • Ashen skin and sweating
  • Sense of impending doom
  • Faintness or giddiness
  • Not relieved by GTN

Treatm‚Äčent

  • Rest the casualty to ease the strain on the heart
  • Lots of reassurance
  • Ask if they have their medication
  • Sit the casualty in a half sitting position with supporting head and shoulders with their knees bent (also called the W position)
  • Ask if they can take aspirin and if so chew slowly
  • Call 999 or 112
  • Be prepared to resuscitate
